the lone genius thing is mostly a myth. one person, one garage, one breakthrough. it makes good copy but it's not how anything actually gets built. real stuff comes from a bunch of people arguing, bouncing ideas off each other, fixing each other's bad takes.
we're eth belgium. yes the name says eth, and most of what we do is in that orbit. but we're not tribal about it. we care about crypto getting better, and that means the whole thing, not just our corner. we'll talk about bridges and l2s without acting like a chain is a sports team. anyone in this space long enough knows the maximalist energy gets old fast, and the people actually shipping things tend to use whatever tool fits the job. one ecosystem, different rooms.
what we're against is the closed-box extractive model that's eaten most of the consumer internet. systems where you're the product, where your data leaves you and never comes back, where three companies decide what billions of people see. ethereum and crypto more broadly aren't a magic fix for that, but they offer a different starting point, and that's worth showing up for.
ethereum is a workbench. somewhere you sketch things, break them, try again. the people at the bench are students, devs, designers, retirees, artists, the curious, the suspicious, the people still figuring out what a wallet is. we want all of them in the room, including the ones who think the whole thing is overhyped.
belgium is a good place for a community like this. it's already a mix, languages, cultures, opinions, a country that runs on compromise and weird federalism and somehow works. ethbelgium runs similarly. no single answer, no head office vibe, just people who care and put in the time.
what we actually want to do: meetups that aren't pitch decks in disguise, workshops where you leave knowing something you didn't yesterday, conversations that include the people who think we're wrong, space for projects that aren't trying to be the next unicorn.
if you want to come hang out, build something, ask a question you think is stupid, you're already in. you don't need to be on chain. you don't need to know what gas is. just show up.
